ARTIST'S STATEMENT
With my practice rooted in drawing there is generally a preference to maintain a spontaneous reply to my observations. This approach also comes from my fascination with the artist's sketchbook, displaying an impulsive reaction in self-expression. A long and passionate engagement with figurative drawing often accommodates this approach, alongside the addictive environment of the life class. The challenge for an instant response has additionally dictated the choice of medium, the total commitment of a pen for instance or the loose and free flowing characteristics of watercolour.
Alongside the recent introduction to printmaking, through my studies at Norwich University College of the Arts (BA Fine Art), my current work has expanded into an investigation of the inner self and the human psyche. Essentially, the fascination is with our individual journeys through life and more specifically what shapes us as adults. The intention of my current work is to generate an internal dialogue from within the viewer and encourage the contemplation of his or her own unique journey. Possibly provoking deliberation over the direction life can take us, particularly through the complexity of challenges we all have to encounter.
